ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS

Supporting students to access examinations fairly

Some students may require adjustments to their examination arrangements to help them access their assessments and demonstrate what they know and can do.

Access arrangements are considered on an individual basis and must reflect the student's normal way of working within school. They are agreed in advance of examinations and must meet the requirements set by the relevant awarding bodies and JCQ.

Having an identified need, diagnosis or support in school does not automatically mean that a student will receive a particular access arrangement in examinations.

Examination access arrangements are subject to specific criteria set by the awarding bodies and JCQ. The school must have appropriate evidence of need and, where applicable, evidence that the arrangement reflects the student's normal way of working.

What are Access Arrangements?

Access arrangements are adjustments made for students who have a disability, learning difficulty, medical need or other relevant need which may place them at a substantial disadvantage during an examination.

How are Access Arrangements decided?

1. Identify a need

The school considers the student's difficulties and how these affect them when completing assessments.

2. Consider their normal way of working

The school looks at the support the student normally receives in lessons, internal assessments and mock examinations.

3. Gather appropriate evidence

Where required, evidence is gathered to demonstrate the student's need.

4. Agree the appropriate arrangement

The school's SENCo and relevant staff consider which arrangement is appropriate and permitted under the examination regulations.

5. Put the arrangement in place

Where an awarding body requires an application or approval, this must be completed within the required timescales and before the examination.
