Literacy at St George’s C of E Foundation School

At St George’s Church of England Foundation Primary School, we are a caring and inclusive school that enables every individual to flourish. Our Literacy curriculum is adventurous and challenging, leading to resilience, curiosity and independence. We offer a broad curriculum that engages, motivates and challenges pupils, giving them the knowledge, skills and understanding to grow as individuals, preparing them for the next stage in their lives.

Each day, time is set aside for both students and their teachers to Drop Everything And Read. ‘DEAR Time’ gives students the opportunity to have a dedicated quiet reading session aimed at fostering a love of reading. It enables students to discover and broaden their interests, whilst supporting their reading progression and vocabulary development. We also greatly encourage reading outside of school to further deepen pupils’ skills and knowledge. A copy of the school’s recommended reading list can be found below, separated by Key Stage.

Each week, every class will have the opportunity for a session in the school library where they will be able to access a wide and inclusive range of resources to support their learning, personal development and wellbeing. Our library provides the pupils with a safe, nurturing space where they can explore their creativity and imagination, whilst also growing their self-confidence and self-esteem.

“There are many little ways to enlarge your world.  Love of books is the best of all.”

— Jacqueline Kennedy
